What is cheap grace? Isn't grace supposed to be free?
Following the successful Bonhoeffer Celebration last April, we will offer a four part sermon series exploring the Sermon on the Mount, using Dietrich Bonhoeffer's work, The Cost of Discipleship.
All Sunday services will begin at 10AM at St. Ansgar. The last two sermons will be followed by informal discussions at 11:30AM. Coffee and treats will be served. All are welcome!
October 28th - Senior Pastor Bill Barter will begin the series with a look at the Beatitudes, the very start of the Sermon on the Mount. This will coincide with the confirmation of three parish teens who will take on a more adult expression of their faith.
November 4th- Associate Pastor Ellen Schoepf will address the Sermon on the Mount from the perspective of children's ministry. She will offer an extended, multi-generational sermon that will have meaning for children and adults alike.
November 11th- Guest Preacher Reverend Marvin Ellison will approach the Sermon on the Mount from the perspective of Christian ethics and what it means to live and act in the world as Christians.
*This service will be followed by an informal conversation facilitated by Dr. Janet Gunn, a St. Ansgar parishioner and former chair of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Coffee and food will be provided.
November 18th - Reverend Mia Dyson will conclude the series will a pastoral approach to how we take the principles of the Sermon on the Mount into the world in which we live and work.
*This service will be followed by a series wrap-up discussion led by Senior Pastor Bill Barter. Coffee and food will be provided.

Dr. Ellison teaches at the Bangor Theological Seminary.
Reverend Mia Dyson is founder and organizer of "Wellspring," a multi-faith center for spirituality and social action. She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, a ministry partner with the ELCA. Mia and her four children attend St. Ansgar and have become an integral part of the life and work of the congregation. When not doing pastoral work, Reverend Dyson works as a registered nurse.
What would I have done? That is the question that haunts people of faith who study the rise of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a Lutheran pastor whose faith led him to the resistance movement. Although Bonhoeffer was hanged in a concentration camp and did not live to see Liberation, his courage, writings, and theological convictions speak to us today. In particular, we at St. Ansgar are challenged by his cautions against "cheap grace."
